Riding the hover board is a great way for people of all ages to have lots of fun for long periods of time. But what happens when the hover board breaks? Are there resources out there that can provide some kind of direction on how to repair it? It may seem complex but there are ways that you can save money by repairing the self-balancing scooter on your own. Below, we have listed the most common issues that people have encountered and ways to fix the problems.

Before getting into the more complex issues and repairs, the first thing that you should do is perform a master reset of the hover board. A master reset could remedy issues that range from a red light displaying on the hover board, any unusual sounds and the board not charging. Now, how do you perform a master reset? Depending on the brand of the hover board, is to hold the power button for about ten seconds. In most cases, you will see a red light appear and then disappear and that should the end of the reset. To ensure the proper way to do a reset, you should refer to your owner’s manual.

With that out of the way, the most common problem that hover board riders encounter is the “red light error”. In most cases, when the red light flashes once, it typically means that there may be some loose wiring in your hover board which would require you to use a screwdriver to take apart the main body of the board and start disconnecting and reconnecting any wires you see. If you see the red light blinking twice, you may have an issue with your circuit board. That is a more complex issue and you would have to buy a replacement circuit board and follow the directions that the manufacture provides. When you see the red light blinking four times, you might have an issue with your motor. Six blinking red lights usually means your battery is the issue at hand. Anything above six typically means replacing a gyroscope could remedy the issue.

Another problem that a lot of riders encounter is when the hover board will not turn off. When this happens, it is recommended that you get your screwdriver and carefully remove the battery and then install it again. When you face the issue of the hover board not turning on, the first thing you should do is to check if your battery is charged. Usually green lights during the charging process means that the board is fully charged and ready to ride.

Hover board riders have also experienced times when only one side of the hover board is functional. According to all the manufactures, this problem could be the result of a gyroscope that needs to be replaced. There are two types of gyroscopes (male and female) and the best way to determine which one you have you in your hover board is to check your owner’s manual.  After that, it is a simple process of ordering your part and removing and replacing.

A common issue that we have heard riders encounter are hover board that get wet. Whether it is because of riding in the rain or if you accidentally spill liquid, there are a few ways to make sure your hover board is back to its normal state. In all cases, acting quickly is very important. You want to make sure that you remedy the issue as soon as possible so that the water does not spread to all parts of the hover board. The first thing you should do is unplug the battery to avoid any electrical shocks. Grab your screwdriver and remove the panels that are covering the electronics of the hover board. If you think that the mother board has gotten wet, disconnect it from the hover board and simply place it in a bowl of rice for about 24 hours. That rule usually applies to all electrical parts of the board as well. Once completely dry, reinstall all electronics and leave the board open for another 24 hours to endure that all water has been removed.

Another common issue is when the hover board wheels lock in place. This problem can be solved by removing the screws that hold the wheel in place and pulling off the wheel entirely. Most of the time, the issue is resolved by replacing the washer which separates the wheel from the motor. We recommend doing the same on both sides so that you can avoid the issue for a longer period of time.

In conclusion, performing repairs on your own is not out of the realm of possibility. It may seem intimidating at first, but following the steps above could save you money in the future. But what happens if your hover board cannot be fixed? You have followed all the steps to repair it but still no positive results. It may be time for a new hover board.
